Flow

An audiovisual installation telling the story of the 1990s eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano in Montserrat

Flow

Flow is a 3m high audiovisual installation exploring the lived experiences of the inhabitants of the island of Montserrat during the eruptions of the Soufrière Hills volcano in the second half of the 1990s.

The swirling column of light features animations that illuminate the science of volcanos and lava conduits, and accompany spoken word segments in which Montserrations reflect on living through an eruption, dealing with the pervasive ash and the upheavals of repeated evacuations.

Output Arts produced Flow working with volcanologists and social scientists from University of East Anglia as part of their Mountain Aglow exhibit and the Disasters Passed research and engagement project.

The work was premiered at Norwich Science Festival before going to Montserrat for the Alliouagana Festival.

The piece is now a permanent exhibit on the island, managed by the Montserrat Museum and Montserrat Volcano Observatory. It travels around schools on the island teaching a new generation about the science and history of the volcano.
