Protocol
Sculptural cardboard and tech project with schools

Output Arts and 60 students from Ursuline and Seven Kings High Schools in Ilford created Protocol, a pair of communicating machines that mix low-technology materials and traditional crafting techniques with modern digital components and computer programming to create a thoughtful and fun display of cardboard and light.
The two machines take inspiration from modern Ilford – the high street and residential tower blocks – and open a dialogue between people, between the old and the new, between arts and engineering education. The piece touches on the students' concerns about their own future, that of Ilford and of our planet - asking questions about living in London, affordability, waste and consumerism.
The Lab Central Schools’ Residency was commissioned and produced by SPACE and Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure, funded by Arts Council England.
